Kolkata: The mother of the RG Kar rape-and-murder victim, now a BJP candidate, once again used her saree to convey a powerful message — this time wearing one inscribed with ‘Shaktirupena Sangsthita' (embodiment of strength) — as she filed her nomination at the Barrackpore Sub-Divisional Officer's administrative office on Thursday.
She was accompanied by former Union minister Smriti Irani and Tripura former chief minister Biplab Deb. Earlier in the day, before submitting her nomination, she visited a Shiva-Kali temple near her residence to offer prayers, along with her husband and local BJP leaders and supporters.
A rally was then taken out along BT Road up to the traffic crossing, with BJP workers and supporters raising ‘We want justice' slogans. While heading to file her nomination, the candidate reiterated her call to oust the Trinamool Congress govt from the state.
Explaining why she chose April 9 to file her nomination, she said it holds deep personal significance. "It was on a 9th that my child came into my life, and she was taken away from me on another 9th. That is why I chose this date," she said.
Addressing the gathering, Smriti Irani said: "This mother is not just a BJP candidate; she represents every woman in Bengal. Under her leadership, Bengal will get justice." The victim's mother broke down in tears during Irani's speech.
According to the affidavit, the total value of her movable assets — including several bank fixed deposits, savings accounts and jewellery — is Rs 19,02,432. Among these, she owns a car worth Rs 8 lakh, jointly with her husband. The car was originally purchased by their deceased daughter and was later transferred to their names. As per the affidavit, she currently has Rs 20,000 in cash. The total value of her husband's movable assets stands at Rs 35,96,350.
Earlier, the BJP candidate drew attention by campaigning in a saree with the slogan ‘Merudanda Bikri Nei' (My spine is not for sale).
