  • Kolkata: Sixteen out of 19 appellate tribunals started functioning at Joka's Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee National Institute of Water and Sanitation from Monday. According to EC officials, the dashboard was yet to be set up, hence the number of appeals disposed of or taken for hearing was difficult to produce on Monday.

The development comes after 23 days of the EC notifying its formation. Even on Monday, appellants were found crowding outside the institute for hearing. But officials said that the appellants need not come physically to the institute in Joka.

The two-judge bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi stated that a letter from Calcutta High Court Sujoy Paul informed that an intro session was held on Sunday. "They worked even on weekends, without taking leaves.

The CJ, while performing his judicial duties in the normal course, contributed extra hours...so that assigned responsibility was completed smoothly. We equally appreciate the judicial officers," CJI Surya Kant observed.
