  • Kalyani: Police on Friday arrested Trinamool councillor Rajib Dalal in Nadia. Dalal, who represents Ward 17 and is the first ever chairman of the Haringhata Municipality, was picked up from his residence in Barajaguli.

The arrest was reportedly linked to an alleged altercation on the day of nomination filing by Trinamool candidate Rajib Biswas for the Haringhata constituency. Dalal was accused of getting into an argument with the returning officer at the Kalyani sub-divisional office, following which a complaint was lodged at Kalyani police station.

Dalal was booked under sections 319 and 318(4) of the BNS, along with Section 134 of the Representation of the People Act. He was produced before the Kalyani sub-divisional court remanded him to judicial custody till Monday.

While his wife Sujata and advocate Sourik Mukherjee called the arrest politically motivated, local party leader Chanchal Debnath and municipal chairman Debasish Bose said the arrest without notice was unjustified. The Kalyani court has sought the explanation from the IO why the notice was not served.
