  • Kolkata: The city's weather is expected to be less harsh on Wednesday when the city goes to the polls. The daytime mercury is likely to stay significantly below the normal mark.

The weather office has issued a rain alert for the city, which could be accompanied by gusty wind.

With traces of rain in some parts of the city on Monday, the maximum temperature is already on the retreat. At 32.6°C, it was three notches below the normal mark. This heat parameter is expected to slip further and stand around 31°C on Wednesday.

"Light to moderate thundershower may occur at most places over East & West Burdwan, Bankura, West Midnapore, Hooghly, Howrah, Kolkata, North & South 24 Parganas districts and many places over the rest districts of South Bengal with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty wind one or two places over East & West Burdwan, Bankura, West Midnapore, Hooghly, Howrah, Kolkata, North & South 24 Parganas districts," said a special IMD bulletin for Wednesday.

While nor'wester spells mostly occur towards evenings or nights, Met officials said that the city is also likely to get one to two spells of rain on Tuesday too. In such a case, the minimum temperature will also go down, making the weather tolerable.

Kolkata has been without a nor'wester break for more than 10 days. Even as the mercury surged to the season's highest of 36.8°C five days ago, it started going down gradually. Some districts have been getting a few spells of thundershowers in the past few days, helping the city indirectly to come out of the sauna.
