  • Tension flared in Basanti of South 24 Parganas during the second phase of polling on Wednesday after BJP candidate Bikash Sardar alleged that his convoy was attacked while he was visiting Booth No. 76 in the Kathalberia area.

According to the complaint, a group of nearly 200 to 250 alleged Trinamool-backed miscreants armed with sticks and iron rods targeted his vehicle. The windows of the car were reportedly smashed in the attack. The driver of the vehicle sustained injuries.

Mr Sardar also claimed that there was an attempt to snatch the firearm of one of his security personnel during the violence.

The incident triggered tension in the area. The BJP candidate alleged that central forces present inside the booth did not come forward to rescue him. He also accused the local police of helping the ruling party.

The Trinamool Congress, however, denied all allegations. Party leaders said the accusations were politically motivated and aimed at creating unrest on polling day.

The Election Commission has taken serious note of the matter and has sought a detailed report from the Baruipur Police District. It has also directed authorities to identify those involved and lodge an FIR at the earliest.

Earlier, Basanti police station IC Abhijit Pal had already been placed under suspension over alleged negligence in duty. The latest incident is expected to increase administrative pressure in the area.

The violence in Basanti has once again raised concerns over law and order and the fairness of the election process in the state.
