Darjeeling MP seeks probe into alleged irregularities in Bharat Dal scheme

A complaint alleging possible irregularities in the implementation of the Bharat Dal scheme in the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) region has been taken up by Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, who has written to Union minister Prahlad Joshi seeking a detailed inquiry.
The letter was sent after inputs were reportedly received from local residents regarding suspected pilferage involving individuals linked to the GTA. In the communication, it has been stated that around 47,000 metric tonnes of chana were allegedly requisitioned under the Bharat Dal scheme through a letter dated 5 March, 2024.
It has further been mentioned that another communication, dated 8 April, 2024, from the ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution had suggested that the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India Ltd. (NCCF) coordinate with the GTA for the supply of 14,000 metric tonnes of chana under the scheme.
In his letter, Bista has sought clarification on whether the allocated quantity was fully lifted by the GTA or any agency on its behalf. Details regarding lifting dates, quantities and official acknowledgements have also been requested. Information on any private agency appointed for transportation and distribution of the dal has been sought as well.
Queries have also been raised regarding whether any objections were made by the ministry over the appointment of such agencies, and whether formal requisitions for allocation of pulses were received from GTA officials.
Additionally, details of allocations made under the Bharat Dal scheme to West Bengal and their distribution at the district level have been requested.
“This matter is of paramount public interest, especially for the people of the GTA region. Complete transparency and accountability must be ensured in the utilisation of Central government schemes meant for the common citizen,” Bista said.
It has been indicated that further steps, including a possible probe by central agencies, may be sought after all facts are examined.
