ECI orders ‘zero tolerance’ crackdown on post-poll violence in West Bengal

The Election Commission of India on Tuesday directed Chief Secretary, Director General of Police and Central Armed Police Forces deployed in West Bengal to enforce “zero tolerance” towards any incidents of post-poll violence, stressing the need for strict and immediate action to maintain law and order following the Assembly election results.
In a directive issued after reviewing the situation on the ground, the Commission asked the state administration and security agencies to take all necessary steps to prevent intimidation, reprisals or clashes linked to the electoral outcome. “There must be zero tolerance towards any form of post-poll violence. Strict and prompt action should be taken against anyone found indulging in such activities,” an ECI official said.
The poll body also instructed officials to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, particularly vulnerable groups and political workers, and to maintain a visible presence of security forces in sensitive areas. Senior officers have been asked to remain on alert and respond swiftly to any incidents reported from across the state.
The directive comes amid concerns over sporadic incidents of violence reported after the declaration of results, a recurring issue in parts of the state following elections. The Commission emphasised that the rule of law must prevail and that no individual or group should be allowed to take the law into their own hands.
Officials said the Central Armed Police Forces will continue to assist the state police in maintaining peace, while district administrations have been asked to closely monitor the situation and ensure accountability at all levels.
The Election Commission reiterated that free and fair elections extend beyond polling and counting, and include the post-result environment, underlining its commitment to ensuring a peaceful democratic process.
