Kolkata Police dismiss viral ‘safety advisory with unrest warning’ as fake, assure law-and-order situation intact

A fabricated “public safety advisory” warning of unrest in parts of central Kolkata gained traction online on Wednesday, prompting swift action from the Kolkata Police, which categorically dismissed the document as fake and misleading.
The fake notice, falsely presented as an official communication from the Kolkata Police Department, claimed tensions and disturbances in Ripon Street, Janbazar and surrounding areas, urging residents to restrict movement and follow emergency precautions. The document, bearing the heading “Kolkata Police Department – Public Safety Advisory,” quickly circulated across social media platforms before being flagged as fraudulent.
Kolkata Police clarified that no such advisory had been issued and emphasised that the law-and-order situation across the city remains normal. Officials said the situation is under constant monitoring and there is no cause for alarm.
In an official statement shared online, the police posted the fake advisory itself, clearly marking it as false to prevent further circulation and panic.
Taking a firm stance, the police warned that strict legal action is being initiated against individuals responsible for creating and spreading the forged notice in the name of the Kolkata Police Commissioner.
Authorities urged citizens to rely only on verified updates issued through official police channels and not to forward unverified messages that could incite unnecessary fear.
The fake document closely resembled an authentic police notice, complete with formatting, insignia, and references to “public safety guidelines.” It advised residents to avoid gatherings, remain indoors, and follow official updates, elements that added to its credibility and helped it spread rapidly.
Police officials said such attempts to misuse official identity are being taken seriously, especially in sensitive situations where misinformation can disrupt public order.
Reiterating their appeal, Kolkata Police urged people to verify information before sharing and to report suspicious messages. The incident highlights the growing challenge of misinformation during politically sensitive periods and the need for caution in consuming digital content.
