Two youths were attacked near their homes in Polba, leaving one dead and another undergoing treatment. Police have arrested three persons in connection with the incident.
According to police and local sources, Somnath Bhattacharya and Srikant Malik were allegedly assaulted by a group of miscreants in front of their homes in Mahanad village on Tuesday afternoon. Both sustained serious injuries and were first taken to Polba Rural Hospital, then shifted to Chinsurah Imambara Hospital. As their condition worsened, they were referred to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Somnath Bhattacharya died on the way to the hospital at 8 a.m. today. His father, Kashinath Bhattacharya, alleged that his son, a Trinamul Congress supporter, had gone out with Srikant after hearing a commotion and returned severely injured following the attack.
Police rushed to the spot and arrested three suspects. Hooghly Rural Police Superintendent Sunny Raj said the incident was not linked to post-poll violence. Preliminary investigation suggests the two victims were drinking together and became involved in a dispute, which escalated into violence.
A police picket has been set up, and paramilitary forces deployed in Mahanad village.
