Kshudiram Tudu, who took oath as a minister in the ninth state Cabinet on Saturday, has long been associated with Burdwan as a schoolteacher. His elevation has sparked celebrations among neighbours and colleagues alike.
Originally from Bagdubi, under Barikul police station in Bankura district, Tudu has lived in Burdwan town for several years. He currently resides in a rented house in the Kalna Gate area and has also purchased a single-storey house in Nari Belbagan under Rayan Gram Panchayat, where he planned to settle permanently.
Residents of Belbagan celebrated both his electoral victory and his induction into the state cabinet. Local resident Anirban Dey said: “We are extremely happy that someone from our area has become a minister. It is a matter of pride for us.”
Describing Tudu as “a very gentle and helpful person,” Dey said the newly-inducted minister had maintained close ties with local residents during the election campaign. Tudu was elected from the Ranibandh Assembly constituency after contesting since 2016.
For decades, Tudu has been engaged in teaching in Burdwan. He currently teaches Bengali at Banipith High School. His wife, Malati Tudu Hembram, works as an ASHA worker in Burdwan.
Dr Gopiballav Roy, recently retired headmaster of Banipith High School, described Tudu as “a man of action”. He said Tudu played a key role in establishing the SC/ST hostel at the school through his initiative and effort.
“He is highly disciplined. Arriving at and leaving school on time has always been his habit. He also shares a close bond with students,” Roy added.
Before joining Banipith High School, Tudu taught at a school in the Jamarh area of Burdwan.
Anindita Bhattacharya, owner of the Kalna Gate house where Tudu rents accommodation, said: “He and his family have always been polite and well-behaved. We are very happy that he has become a minister.”
