  • Kolkata: To prevent the entry of heavy vehicles, on the newly set-up Bailey bridge which connects Salt Lake and VIP Road near Dakshindari, Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has installed height bars on both the approach ends according to the recommendations of the Bidhannagar traffic police.

The Bailey bridge, the second over Kestopur Canal following the Lake Town Bailey bridge, was set up by KMDA. Bidhannagar traffic police started a trial run from the evening of Feb 11, 2026. It was during this that police found a few traffic issues that needed to be upgraded, including installing height bars to prevent entry of heavy vehicles like buses and trucks through the Bailey bridge.

The height bars are around nine feet tall so that only small vehicles can ply on the bridge. A traffic signal post has also been installed on the VIP Road end for the safe movement of vehicles.

"VIP Road is a high-speed corridor. Vehicles intending to move towards the airport after coming out from the Bailey bridge from Salt Lake are parallelly crossing the city-bound flank of VIP Road and taking the median cutout to turn right to get on to the airport-bound flank. There needs to be 24-hour traffic surveillance at the place to prevent any mishap as city-bound vehicles would also be moving in from Lake Town end," said a police officer.

The Bailey bridge closes around 11 pm.
