Kolkata: Bengal Police has suspended Baruipur IC Samar De and SI Ruidas following allegations of physical assault on BJP candidate Bishwajit Pal in South 24 Parganas, shortly after the declaration of the assembly election results. The disciplinary action follows a formal complaint alleging that Pal was manhandled and assaulted by police on May 5.
"Samar De is hereby placed under suspension with effect from May 8, pending enquiry into his conduct in a departmental proceeding. During suspension period, he will draw half of his basic pay and other admissible allowances portionately. He will remain attached with the unit headquarters till a fresh order of transfer is issued," the order by ADG (law and order) Ajay Mukund Ranade said.
Earlier, a video clip went viral, purportedly showing De and other officers dragging Pal and forcing him into a police vehicle. While the authenticity of the footage has not been independently verified, it triggered an internal inquiry by the state police.
According to BJP sources, the incident occurred during a period of intense post-poll tension in the constituency. While Trinamool reported unrest in the area, Pal alleged cops targeted him without provocation. Pal also claimed he was "implicated in false cases".
