  • Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), in a released statement issued on Monday, distanced itself from the incident involving the vice-chancellor of Vidyasagar University on 5 May and alleged that attempts were being made to malign the organisation by misusing its name in educational institutions across West Bengal.

In the statement, ABVP state general secretary Dr Neelkantha Bhattacharya said the student organisation did not support any activity that went against its ideals and principles and remained committed to maintaining peace, democratic values, and a healthy atmosphere on campuses.

The statement came amid political tensions in educational institutions following the declaration of the Assembly election results on 4 May.

According to the ABVP, certain Trinamul Congress-backed elements were allegedly trying to create unrest in colleges and universities while concealing their political identity and using the organisation’s name.

“Such motivated activities are disturbing the academic atmosphere and are aimed at tarnishing the image of ABVP,” Dr Bhattacharya said.

The ABVP leader also demanded immediate administrative action against those allegedly involved in creating disorder in the name of the organisation.

“ABVP has no connection with any activity that is contrary to the organisation’s principles. Strict steps should be taken against those trying to spread chaos by misusing our name,” he added.

Reiterating the organisation’s stand, Dr. Bhattacharya said ABVP would continue to work democratically for the protection of students’ interests while ensuring peace and normalcy in educational institutions across the state.
