  • Just days after the BJP’s historic victory in West Bengal ended the Trinamool Congress regime, the new government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday launched its first major administrative crackdown in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case by suspending three senior IPS officers over the alleged mishandling of the case.

The suspended officers include former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, along with IPS officers Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta. The state government also announced departmental proceedings against all three officers.

Addressing a press conference at Nabanna, Adhikari accused the officers of serious lapses during the investigation into the brutal rape and murder case that had sparked nationwide outrage and triggered massive protests across Bengal.

The Chief Minister alleged that the officers attempted to influence the victim’s family by offering bribes and conducted media briefings without official authorisation during the course of the investigation.

“The officers were involved in offering bribes to the family and held press conferences without written orders,” Adhikari said while announcing the suspensions.

The RG Kar case had become one of the most politically explosive incidents in Bengal, with the opposition repeatedly accusing the previous administration of shielding influential individuals and mishandling the investigation.

The decision to suspend the senior officers is being viewed as a strong political and administrative signal from the newly formed BJP government, which had campaigned aggressively on issues of law and order, women’s safety and alleged institutional corruption under the previous regime.

The Bengal government is expected to initiate a detailed internal inquiry into the conduct of the suspended officers in the coming days.
