• 1 dead, 16 injured in Topsia, Howrah bridge bus accidents

  • Kolkata: Two major bus accidents in the city left one person dead and 16 others injured. The first accident occurred around 10 am at the crossing of Hughes Road and the PC Connector. Police said, a private app-based shuttle bus was speeding toward Science City when the driver lost control. The vehicle rammed into two motorcycles and a bicycle before crashing onto the footpath.

    The motorcyclist, Nityananda Mondal, 45, was declared brought dead at CNMC Hospital. His pillion rider, Riya Mondal, 23, who was wearing a helmet, survived but was admitted to the hospital with multiple injuries. The bus also struck another motorcyclist, Akbar Ali, 48, and a cyclist, Ananta Kumar Nath, 68, both of whom are currently hospitalised. Police have seized the vehicle but the driver managed to flee.

    Earlier that morning, around 6.21 am, a WBTC bus plying on the Howrah-Kamalgachi route was speeding when it crashed into pillar 37. The impact left 13 passengers injured. While most were discharged after preliminary treatment, passengers Gulab, 54, and Rashid Ali, 30, sustained severe injuries and were admitted to the hospital.

    The North Port Police detained the driver and took custody of the damaged bus. Traffic, which was briefly disrupted on the bridge, was later regularised.
