Kolkata: A 17-year-old youth was stabbed to death inside his grocery shop in the New Market area on Wednesday morning in an apparent fallout of romantic jealousy. The victim, Deepak Gupta, succumbed to his injuries at NRS Medical College and Hospital a few hours after the attack.
According to police, the incident occurred between 8.29 am and 8.30 am inside Gupta Store at 8, Amiyo Hazra Lane. The accused, Shashi Tevar (25), a resident of the same locality, entered the shop and allegedly stabbed Gupta multiple times in the throat with a knife before fleeing.
The victim's brother and a friend rushed him to GD Hospital for first aid, from where he was shifted to NRS Hospital for surgery. He passed away at 12.05 pm.
Investigating officers revealed that Tevar was infatuated with a local girl and resented Gupta talking to her. Despite Tevar warning the teenager to maintain his distance, Gupta went to Nicco Park's water park with the girl and mutual friends on Tuesday.
This amusement trip reportedly enraged Tevar, prompting the premeditated fatal assault on Gupta on Wednesday morning.
The accused bought a knife from an adjoining shop before attacking the victim.
New Market Police have initiated a murder case against the accused.
