  • Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor Debraj Chakraborty has been detained and is being interrogated by police in Kolkata in connection with an old case linked to alleged violence following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, intensifying the ongoing crackdown on Trinamool Congress leaders after the change of power in the state. The development has triggered fresh political attention due to Debraj Chakraborty’s proximity to senior Trinamool leadership and his connection to former Rajarhat-Gopalpur MLA Aditi Munshi.

Officials confirmed on Wednesday that Debraj Chakraborty, a councillor of the Biddhannagar Municipal Corporation and husband of singer-turned-politician Aditi Munshi, was detained late Tuesday night. In the recently concluded Assembly elections, Aditi Munshi lost the Rajarhat-Gopalpur Assembly seat, and visuals of her breaking down outside a counting centre after the defeat had gained significant public attention at the time.

Reportedly, the interrogation of Debraj Chakraborty is currently underway as investigators revisit allegations connected to incidents of violence reported after the 2021 poll results.

According to reports, the police action is linked to a case surrounding the unnatural death of BJP worker Prosenjit Biswas in 2021.

At the time, allegations had surfaced claiming that the BJP worker had been forced to take the extreme step amid political tensions following the declaration of election results.

Investigators are now questioning Debraj Chakraborty in connection with the same case, as authorities continue to examine old allegations that have remained under scrutiny for several years.

The detention comes amid a broader campaign by the newly-formed Bharatiya Janata Party government targeting alleged illegal and criminal activities involving Trinamool Congress leaders and workers.

Since the BJP came to power in West Bengal, law enforcement agencies have launched multiple actions against individuals accused of involvement in violence, intimidation and other criminal offences allegedly committed during the previous regime.

So far, there has been no official statement from the police detailing the exact charges or confirming whether further legal action will be initiated against Debraj Chakraborty following the interrogation.
