‘Vacate TMC headquarters building in Kolkata’: Landlord sends notice to party leadership, sets two-month deadline

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been asked to vacate its temporary headquarters in East Kolkata after the owner of the rented property cited security concerns linked to post-election unrest outside the premises.
The multi-storey office building, located near the EM Bypass in the Topsia area, has functioned as the party’s operational headquarters for the past several years while renovation work continued at Trinamool’s original office. According to sources familiar with the matter, the landlord has now formally communicated his decision to reclaim the property.
The owner of the building, Montu Saha, who heads the company Modern Decorators, said the decision was driven purely by concerns over the safety of the property and not by political pressure or any personal differences with the party.
Speaking on the issue, Saha said incidents of vandalism outside the building following the Assembly election results had raised fears about possible damage to the premises in the future. He maintained that any destruction caused during political unrest would directly affect him as the owner of the property.
Saha also clarified that the Trinamool leadership had regularly paid rent according to the agreement and there had been no dispute over financial matters. He added that discussions had already taken place with party representatives and the building is expected to be vacated within the next two months.
The EM Bypass office had been functioning as Trinamool’s key political and organisational centre since 2022. The arrangement was made after the party leadership decided to redevelop its original headquarters in Topsia following the 2021 Assembly election victory.
Although the property was initially leased for two years, the agreement was later extended as construction work at the permanent headquarters remained incomplete.
Over the last four years, the building hosted major organisational meetings, election planning sessions, and media briefings. Separate office spaces had also been prepared for party supremo Mamata Banerjee and General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
Senior leaders, ministers, and MLAs frequently operated from the premises, while the day-to-day management of the office was overseen by state president Subrata Bakshi and vice-president Jay Prakash Majumdar.
The Trinamool Congress has not yet issued any official response regarding the notice to vacate the property.
However, BJP MLA Tapas Roy reacted to the development, saying any action concerning the property should proceed strictly according to law. He stated that legal rules apply equally to everyone and any future process must follow proper legal procedures.
The episode has added another layer to the ongoing political friction in Bengal, where the atmosphere has remained charged following recent political developments in the state.
