  • Kolkata: The state health department has transferred the MSVP of Medical College and Hospital Kolkata (MCHK), Anjan Adhikari, to Raiganj Govt Medical College & Hospital, where he has been sent as a professor of pharmacology.

General surgery professor at MCH Santanu Sen has been asked to take over as the new MSVP.

This is the first transfer in the medical college administration in Bengal after the BJP came into office.

While health officials called this a "routine transfer", a source indicated more heads were set to roll, not only within the medical college administration but also in units, like West Bengal Health Recruitment Board (WBHRB) and West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS). "We are expecting reshuffling of officials, who were embroiled in controversies," said a health department source.

During the RG Kar protest, a complainant had approached various agencies, including the state vigilance commission, the then CM, ED and CBI, pointing at a racket thriving at MCH. The complainant named former Trinamool MLA Sudipto Roy, who also was the Rogi Kalyan Samity chairman of the college, as the kingpin, who he hand in glove with several hospital officials, including MSVP Adhikari. There have also been complaints about touts at the hospital who charged unsuspecting patients and families hefty amounts in exchange for beds, which are supposed to be free at govt hospitals.

Before Adhikari became the MCH MSVP in July 2022, he was a professor of pharmacology at Cooch Behar Medical College.

Doctor forums, such as Joint Platform of Doctors, have written to the Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari for reforms, including overhauling of the WBHRB and WBUHS administrations and restructuring West Bengal Medical Council.
