  • Senior Trinamul Congress leader and party MP Saugata Roy on Tuesday described the Kolkata Police visit to the residence of TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee as an act of “political vendetta”, alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party was systematically targeting leaders of the ruling party across West Bengal.

Reacting strongly to the police action, Roy claimed that repeated raids and investigations involving TMC leaders were politically motivated and lacked any substantive evidence. “This is part of a political vendetta. Raids are being conducted at the homes of TMC leaders across various parts of Bengal. It is not even known what the specific allegations against Abhishek Banerjee are,” Roy said while speaking to reporters. He further asserted that Banerjee could not be held responsible without any factual basis and accused the BJP of using investigative agencies and administrative machinery to harass opposition leaders in the state.

“Abhishek Banerjee cannot be held responsible without any factual basis. However, I am not surprised, as this is the modus operandi of the BJP throughout the entire state,” Roy added. The remarks came after personnel of Kolkata Police visited Banerjee’s residence in connection with an alleged illegal construction case. Police officials were later seen leaving the premises after completing their inquiry.

The development triggered sharp reactions from the Trinamul Congress leadership. Senior TMC leader and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay questioned the role of the police in the matter and suggested that the issue should have remained within the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). “I heard that Abhishek Banerjee had asked the Corporation to tell him what was wrong; he did not have the information. I do not know how the police got involved in the middle of it. What is happening in West Bengal is not democratic. No democratic government runs like this,” Chattopadhyay said.

Meanwhile, Chattopadhyay also reacted briefly to the resignation of Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar from the post of Trinamul Congress district president of the Barrackpore parliamentary district. “She has said her what she had to. We have nothing to say about that,” he remarked. The controversy intensified after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari alleged that several individuals linked to the TMC had accumulated multiple properties and demanded action against them.

The Trinamul Congress, however, dismissed the allegations as “false, fabricated and devoid of credibility”.
