  • The Trinamul Congress’s defeat in the Assembly elections has had a major political impact on Bhadreswar Municipality. Following the defeat of former Chandannagar MLA and senior Trinamul leader Indranil Sen, the political equations in the district have reportedly begun to shift.

Amid this backdrop, a total of nine Trinamul councillors, including Bhadreshwar Municipality Chairman Praloy Chakraborty, submitted their resignations on Thursday evening. The resignations were submitted to the municipality’s Executive Officer.

Bhadreshwar Municipality, which falls under the Chandannagar Assembly constituency, has 22 wards. Trinamul reportedly lost in around 14 wards of the municipality.

Indranil Sen was defeated in the Chandannagar Assembly constituency by nearly 13,000 votes, including losses in the Bhadreshwar area.

However, as the Trinamul Congress still holds a majority in the 22-member municipal board, there is no immediate crisis regarding the functioning of the board. Party sources said that the municipal board is likely to be led by Vice-Chairman Feroz Khan for the time being.

After submitting his resignation, Praloy Chakraborty said: “No one from the BJP or Trinamul asked me to leave the post. I resigned voluntarily to respect the verdict given by the people. I want the new government to work for the people.”
