  • Veteran Trinamul Congress (TMC) leader Ashish Banerjee, former MLA of Rampurhat and former Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, has resigned from his posts as district chairman and chairman of the Birbhum district core committee.

Earlier, Labhpur MLA Abhijit Sinha had also resigned as a member of the Birbhum district TMC core committee.

Mr Banerjee, who lost the Assembly election this year, submitted his resignation letter to the party chief today, stating that he would henceforth remain an ordinary party member. “The core committee of Birbhum district had become non-functional. I fully agree with Abhijit Sinha that there is no need to remain part of that committee. The core committee failed, and the TMC lost six of the district’s eleven Assembly seats, compared with only one loss in the 2021 Assembly elections,” Mr Banerjee said.

Meanwhile, the scheduled visit of TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee to Birbhum was cancelled today owing to illness. He had been due to meet victims of alleged post-poll violence, accompanied by Kajal Sheikh, Sabhadhipati of the Birbhum Zilla Parishad and a close associate of Mr Mondal.
