  • Kolkata: Indradeb Bhattacharya (51), who was critically injured after a fall from the fourth-floor stairwell balcony of Khadya Bhavan on Monday, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning. Bhattacharya was a joint secretary-rank official and nodal officer of the food and supplies department. He was under treatment at the state-run IPGMER-SSKM Hospital.

“He had multiple injuries, which were of severe nature. He was rushed to our Trauma Care Centre in a critical and unconscious condition and was put on ventilation right after being rushed here. Despite all efforts, he died,” said a source in the hospital.

Doctors said the Bhawanipore resident sustained injury all over his body – head, chest, rib fracture, limbs with multiple fractures and internal bleeding in addition to the external injuries.

Sources said Bhattacharya was a joint secretary-rank official and nodal officer of the department. The incident occurred shortly after office hours began on Monday at the state govt headquarters of the food and supplies department on Free School Street. Employees and visitors were taken aback when they heard the loud thud. Many rushed to find out what was happening and found Bhattacharya fallen into a heap of redundant furniture stacked up on the ground floor.

While it is not clear why he went towards the sixth floor, CCTV footage reportedly showed him going to that floor.
