Mamata agrees to Firhad’s resignation as civic body mayor: Kunal Ghosh
The Statesman | 4 June 2026
Mamata Banerjee gave a nod to Firhad Hakim’s proposal to resign from the mayoral post claimed by TMC leader Kunal Ghosh today. However Mr Hakim is yet to tender his resignation at the civic body headquarters officially.
Speculations of Mr Hakim’s resignation became rife after Trinamul Congress leader Kunal Ghosh informed about the matter today. Speaking on the issue, Kunal Ghosh said: “Firhad Hakim had repeatedly expressed his desire to resign from the post of Mayor. He had even said that he was unable to work and became defunct. Even at today’s meeting, it was said the KMC was defunct and the municipal commissioner would work taking suggestions from the MLAs. Considering every situation, he had told our party chief to resign with dignity. To keep his dignity and respect, our party leader Mamata Banerjee allowed him to resign from the post of Mayor.”
Notably, Mr Hakim had earlier hinted about leading a semi-retired life at the moment. Even yesterday, when asked about former MMiC Tarak Singh’s resignation, Mr Hakim initially denied having any knowledge about it. However, later he hinted that it was a teamwork and whatever they do together, will do it collectively.
According to the information received from KMC sources, Mr Hakim attended the administrative meeting by the Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari today and later came to the KMC headquarters. Later, before leaving, he denied putting down his papers saying that he had still not taken any decision on the matter. As learnt, Mr Hakim has not yet officially tendered his resignation officially. According to the norms, Mr Hakim would have to submit his resignation to the KMC chairperson. However, till 6.30 p.m, an official confirmation of the resignation was not received.
