TMC councillor arrested amid extortion allegations; crowd chants 'chor, chor' at court in Kolkata

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor Mahesh Sharma was greeted with slogans such as ‘Chor, chor’ (thief, thief) by the crowd when he was brought to the Bankshall court for production on Thursday.
Sharma was arrested in connection with alleged extortion and intimidation in his ward under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), news agency PTI reported.
A complaint accusing the councillor from the city’s Burrabazar area, located in the central business district, of making extortion demands was lodged at the local police station.
Arrested on Wednesday, Sharma was met with slogans and chants of ‘chor, chor’ and ‘jail bharo’ at the Bankshall court. According to reports, the slogans were raised outside the Burrabazar police station as well, where Sharma was in custody.
The prosecution is likely to seek his custody during the court proceedings.
