Kolkata: Yet another Trinamool Congress councillor, Mohammad Jasimuddin (54), representing ward 39, was arrested on Sunday morning by Kolkata Police from his College Street residence.
He joined his colleague, Trinamool Patuli councillor Bappaditya Dasgupta, in police custody in a gap of just 15-odd hours. He became the eighth KMC councillor to be arrested in past 14 days.
The arrest followed a dramatic five-and-a-half-hour standoff that ended early Sunday morning when the Jorasanko police forcefully unlocked his residence and forced him out of his hiding.
The College Street councillor had holed himself inside his 95 M G Road residence with the doors bolted, prompting law enforcement to deploy a locksmith to break through the main entrance and a collapsible gate.
The operation, which started around 5.30 am, sparked massive tension in the Kalabagan area. As the police led Jasimuddin away, his aides gathered to block the police vehicle, prompting furious neighbours to launch a counter-protest. The agitated crowd once again pelted eggs at the accused politician, forcing the police to resort to a mild baton charge to restore order.
The arrest traces back to a 2023 case registered under the POCSO Act, involving the alleged harassment of a minor girl from the area. Tensions boiled over on Saturday night when the councillor’s aides allegedly cornered the girl — now a college student — alone on a deserted street, slapping and kicking her in an attempt to coerce the family into withdrawing the case.
Locals also accused the political goons of breaking all CCTV cameras in the vicinity.
The girl claimed that prior to May this year, and ever since 2021, the police allegedly visited her family’s home and threatened them. According to the her, Jasimuddin also reportedly offered money to settle the case and was willing to pay RS 20 lakh for its withdrawal.
According to Lalbazar officials, Jasimuddin was formally arrested around 11.45 am though he has shown been shown arrested in a second case. He faces stringent charges under two separate cases, including sections of the BNS for criminal intimidation, assault, wrongful restraint, and voluntarily causing hurt, read alongside Section 23 of the Pocso Act.
Two individuals, including the councilor, have been arrested so far. Cops claimed that his associated had named Jasimuddin as the main conspirator.
Jasimuddin has been remanded in one-day cop custody.
Meanwhile, councillor Dasgupta was produced in court on Sunday where he was sent to 14 days of police custody amidst drama. While cops stood in riot gear to stop a possible egg attack on him while being led away from the Patuli PS, they claimed they received at least seven fresh complaints, all of which were being probed before FIRs are drawn up based on the complaints that included allegations of unlawful assembly, criminal trespassing and extortion.
Alipore court public prosecutor Sourin Ghoshal said police custody was required to unearth the truth, reconstruction of the crime scene, identification and arrest of his other accomplices.
