The Bidhannagar (South) Police has once again summoned former state sports minister Aroop Biswas in connection with the Messi event fiasco case, after he skipped to appear before the police on Friday.
As per sources in the police, Biswas was sent a second summons on Friday, asking him to appear before the police for questioning on Monday morning. New Alipore police pasted two notices at the former minister’s residence on Sunday.
The TMC leader was issued a summons based on a complaint filed by Satadru Dutta, the organiser of Lionel Messi’s event in Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium last year. Biswas was earlier asked to appear for questioning by June 5. Aroop Biswas, through his advocate, had requested the Bidhannagar South police station for a two-week extension for the appearance deadline, citing his physical illness. Notably, one of the notices pasted on Sunday mentions that no medical documents were produced while seeking the extension.
On Friday, a complaint was also filed at Pragati Maidan Police Station against Satadru Dutta by one Avijit Dutta, alleging criminal intimidation, threat, extortion and criminal conspiracy. The complainant claimed that Satadru Dutta allegedly extorted Rs 5 crore from him by threatening to implicate him in what the complainant called was a false case. Police sources said they were looking into the complaint.
The Messi case file was reopened immediately after the change of government in West Bengal. Dutta, who was arrested in the wake of the Messi event fiasco, pointed fingers at the former sports minister after he was released on bail. Subsequently, Dutta lodged a police complaint against Aroop Biswas and his sister-in-law Jui Biswas. He also filed a complaint against the then-DGP Rajeev Kumar.
An FIR was registered against Aroop Biswas and others under five sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: Sections 3(5) (common intention), 308(2) (extortion), 318(4) (cheating), 351(2) (criminal intention/criminal trespass), and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy).
In December 2025, chaos broke out at the Salt Lake Stadium during Messi’s event as leaders, ministers, VVIPs, and their family members made attempts to get up close and take photos with the star footballer.
As per the complaint, Aroop Biswas had allegedly extorted passes from Dutta. Due to the mismanagement allegedly caused by ministers, Messi and his team left the field after spending just 15 to 20 minutes.
