Kolkata: A Trinamool functionary from Barrackpore, who went into hiding in Jammu & Kashmir, was arrested by the detective wing of the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate on Tuesday in connection with multiple cases, including extortion and criminal intimidation. The accused is being brought to Barrackpore on a three-day transit remand.
According to police sources, the arrested leader has been identified as Naushad Alam, former president of the Minority Cell of the Dum Dum-Barrackpore organisational district of the TMC and a former councillor of the Barrackpore Municipality.
According to police sources, several complaints of extortion, threats and other criminal activities were lodged against Alam. Following the declaration of the West Bengal Assembly election results on May 4, in which the BJP defeated the TMC and came to power in the state with Suvendu Adhikari becoming chief minister, Alam allegedly went into hiding.
