Kolkata: Mass resignations by councillors in civic bodies across the northern suburbs and Barrackpore industrial belt, including North Dum Dum, Titagarh, North Barrackpore, New Barrackpore, Bhatpara, Kanchrapara, Halisahar and Garulia, continued on Friday, with councillors of Kamarhati Municipality, including the chairman, resigned.
Kamarhati Municipality chairman Gopal Saha and a councillor have tendered their resignations from their posts.
According to sources, Saha submitted his resignation letter to Kamarhati Municipality executive officer Suresh Chandra Hira, citing health issues.
In a parallel development, Shyamal Chakraborty, councillor of ward and a chairman-in-council (CIC) member (health), also submitted his resignation to the executive officer on Friday. With these submissions, two elected representatives of the municipality have formally resigned from their responsibilities.
Executive officer Hira said, “The chairman has resigned citing physical illness. At the same time, CIC member Shyamal Chakraborty has submitted his resignation, taking moral responsibility for his party’s electoral defeat. The affairs of the municipality will now be conducted in accordance with the prescribed administrative rules and procedures.”
