Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secreatary Abhishek Banerjee arrived at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Sunday for questioning before noon, the second time in four days. Security was beefed up outside the probe agency’s headquarters in Kolkata, Bhabani Bhawan, in view of the TMC second-in-command’s appearance.
Abhishek was earlier questioned by CID officials at its headquarters on Thursday for five and a half hours, the same day the Diamond Harbour MP landed in Kolkata after back-to-back meetings with Opposition leaders, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
However the probe officials were not satisfied with his answers and summoned him again on Sunday at noon. Abhishek reached the agency’s office in time.
The TMC general secretary had arrived at the CID headquarters after skipping three summons, at the direction of the Calcutta High Court which had directed him to cooperate with the probe agency’s investigation.
He was questioned in the case involving allegations that the signatures of multiple newly elected TMC MLAs were forged on an official party letter submitted to the Assembly nominating Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition.
On Saturday, the West Bengal police carried out a pre-dawn search operation at Abhishek’s Kalighat residence looking for his executive assistant, Sumit Roy, who is reportedly absconding in a land fraud case.
The police team broke open the entrance lock with assistance from personnel of the state Disaster Management Department and carried out their search for over two hours.
