Maidul Islam, a close confidant of Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, was on Tuesday, June 16 arrested by the Diamond Harbour Police in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district.
Islam, a popular face of TMC teachers’ cell, was initially detained by the police early this morning for interrogation. Later on, he was shown as arrested by the Diamond Harbour Police, IANS reported.
Diamond Harbour is the Lok Sabha constituency of Abhishek Banerjee.
Before joining TMC, Islam was earlier an activist of the CPI(M). After becoming a part of the Mamata Banerjee-led party, he is said to have become a close confidant of Abhishek Banerjee within a short period.
As per reports, when Abhishek Banerjee appeared at the Salt Lake office of the Enforcement Directorate on Monday for questioning in connection with the cash-for-school-job case, Islam accompanied him till the entrance of the ED office.
Sources told IANS that Islam was arrested in connection with the mysterious death of an influential member of the local panchayat in 2022.
Debabrata Bhattacharya, also known as Nimai, was the deputy head of Bolsiddhi Kalinagar village panchayat in South 24 Parganas district. He died under mysterious circumstances in 2022.
At that time, a suicide note was recovered by police that mentioned Maidul’s name. “We are trying to unravel the mystery of the death by interrogating Maidul,” a member of the investigating team said.
