• Engineers measure Abhishek properties in Kalighat zone, not involved, says KMC

  • Kolkata: A “Kolkata Municipal Corporation-appointed agency” on Tuesday started measurement of the properties either owned or co-owned by Abhishek Banerjee, family or his company, said a source. The exercise aimed at taking note of the deviations from the sanctioned plan of a couple of prime properties in the Kalighat area.

However, officials in the KMC buildings department said the dept was in no way connected with the exercise. A source in the KMC buildings dept said measurement of two buildings was done on the part of the owners only. “We are in no way connected with the measurement of the properties located on Harish Mukherjee Road and Kalighat Road. The owners may have done it. They will then need to send a copy of the findings to us. If need be, we will send our team to match our report with their findings,” said a KMC official.

Civic officials said the KMC launched parallel inquiries into 17 properties, listed as owned or co-owned by Banerjee, his company or family members. While the civic assessment department is reviewing property tax dues linked to the properties, purportedly linked to Banerjee, the buildings dept is checking for irregularities or deviations from sanctioned plans. Officials said notices under section 400(1) of the KMC Act 1980 — issued for deviations from the sanctioned plan — were pasted on all the 17 addresses. Of these properties, 14 are in Kalighat-Bhowanipore belt, 2 on Panditiya Road and one in New Alipore area, said a KMC official. ‘Shantiniketan’ on Harish Mukherjee Road, where a notice was pasted on May 18 for alleged unauthorised construction, is among the 17 properties.

In the notice pasted on ‘Shantiniketan’, persons concerned have been directed to appear before the executive engineer of the buildings dept with the sanctioned plan as well as a fresh drawing of the alterations made. “Once the documents are submitted, we will give the owners an opportunity to appear for a hearing,” said a source.

At a meeting of TMC MLAs at Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat home on May 20, Abhishek had said: “Let them do whatever they want. Raze my home, send notice. I won’t bow down. Come what may, my fight continues against BJP.”

Abhishek had sought additional time from KMC to reply to the notices.

According to a KMC buildings dept official, the decision to accept any appeal from Abhishek appointed lawyer seeking further time will rest with the civic higher-ups. “According to rules we need to check any alterations from the sanctioned plan on the ground and based on our inspections we give notices to the errant promoters or owners of buildings. In this case, we have pasted notices on properties and asked the owner/owners to appear before the buildings dept and submit necessary documents, drawings,” said the civic official stressing the need for an early inspection of prime residential properties where the civic body officials suspect deviations have taken place.

“We are authorized to visit any buildings and check whether illegal constructions have been done,” said a KMC buildings department official.
