• CM pledges 1,000 EFR jobs for Gorkhas, tourism push

  • Kurseong: Promising a renewed focus on tourism and employment generation in the Darjeeling hills, CM Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday announced the recruitment of more than 1,000 Gorkha youths into the Eastern Frontier Rifles (EFR) and unveiled an ambitious development roadmap for north Bengal during his first official visit to the Hills since assuming office, reports Roshan Gupta.

    Addressing a public gathering in Kurseong, Adhikari said the revival of the EFR and the promotion of tourism would be among his govt's top priorities.

    "We are committed to ensuring that 1,000 Gorkha youths are recruited into the Eastern Frontier Rifles, in which 30% will be reserved for women," the CM said.

    Highlighting the region's tourism potential, he said the govt would focus on improving connectivity, infrastructure, disaster preparedness and public services to make the hills a more attractive destination for visitors.

    "A comprehensive roadmap for the development of north Bengal has already been prepared. Tourism promotion, better roads, disaster mitigation, skill development, women's empowerment, and youth-focused initiatives will be key pillars of our agenda," Adhikari said."All welfare and development schemes of the Centre will reach the people of the Hills," he said and added, "The former CM used to visit the Hills as a tourist. I am here to work."

    "Our govt is committed to creating jobs and strengthening the rural economy. The VB-G RAM G scheme will provide employment while building durable assets for villages across the hills," he said.

    Adhikari reiterated his commitment to strengthen healthcare and said, "We are committed to establishing a medical college in Kalimpong. Healthcare facilities across Kurseong and Darjeeling will also be strengthened," he said. The CM also spoke of reviving tea industry and investments in education and sports.
