• Administrator regime starts, Salt Lake roads get a fresh coat

  • Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken up road repairs in Salt Lake to patch up the potholed ridden spots and lay fresh bitumen on as many damaged road stretches as possible before monsoon.

Civic officials said that about four to five road stretches in Salt Lake have been identified which are in a terrible state and need urgent repairs, like the stretch near tank no 13.

Work has been taken up on the main thoroughfare in FE block and will follow other places which are badly riddled with craters and potholes. The authorities are stripping away the old broken bitumen layers to lay fresh, durable pitch. Civic officials said that the aim is to cover as many damaged stretches as possible to prevent waterlogging and commuting hazards during the upcoming monsoon.

Battered roads in Salt Lake have been a sore point for residents for the last couple of years. Residents said although some parts of the main thoroughfares were earlier repaired, wear and tear have again developed on the repaired spots and condition of roads inside the blocks had again turned poor. Dust particles from loose bitumen strewn on damaged spots fill the air as vehicles pass by.

“It is good to see that the civic administration has acknowledged the pathetic state of Salt Lake roads and is moving quickly to improve the conditions,” said Dipankar Mukherjee, a resident of Salt Lake CL block.

Residents said that there are a number of stretches which need urgent repairs. “Chowpatty Road in CL Block near the metro station has degenerated into an appalling cratered obstacle, almost resembling the surface of the moon. The potholed, caving road and broken pavements pose severe safety risks to bikers, make walking hazardous and threaten drivers with spinal injuries,” said Shayan Mitra Mustafi, secretary, Citizens’ Forum, Salt Lake.

After being elected last month, Bidhannagar MLA and health minister Sharadwat Mukherjee and Rajarhat New Town MLA Piyush Kanodia had held a meeting with BMC officials where the matter of the urgent need of road repairs were discussed.

“As of now patch work will be conducted on as many damaged stretches as possible before monsoons,” Mukherjee said. The minister is keeping touch with the civic body regularly to keep track of pre monsoon preparatory work.
