Kolkata: There should be an adequate govt policy to ensure cybersecurity for public data uploaded on e-governance portals, opined experts at a conference on ethical governance and anti-corruption reforms here on Thursday. The conference was organised by the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence & Statistics (DGCI&S) under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
K Manao Singh, director general of DGCI&S, said the governance system has evolved significantly in the digital era, even as new challenges pertaining to cybersecurity have emerged. “The threat of cyber fraud is ever-present. Therefore, there should be evidence-based statistics for policymaking,” he said.
Onkar Prosad Ghosh, deputy director general of the organisation, said: “Be it govt schemes or services, citizens’ details are uploaded on govt portals. E-governance is necessary, but there needs to be a proper mechanism to protect it from hackers.”
Abhijit Gangopadhyay, MP and former judge of Calcutta High Court, said: “Ethical governance is not just an administrative ideal. Public trust is earned through ethical conduct and transparency. Once this trust weakens, rebuilding it becomes challenging. Technology alone cannot eliminate corruption; it is merely a tool. Its makers must have the awareness to eliminate the vice.”
