  • Kolkata: A 37-year-old woman who had ventured into the forested creeks of the Chulkathi jungle in the Sundarbans to catch crabs was killed by a tiger on Thursday. The victim, Bandana Das, a resident of Kultali in South 24 Parganas, and her husband Gautam had set out on the fishing trip in a country boat two days ago.

Locals said Bandana was cooking on one end of the boat when the tiger pounced on her. Gautam rushed to the deck upon hearing a commotion, only to see the animal dragging his wife away. Hearing his screams, other fishermen nearby rushed to help. Though they eventually managed to drive the tiger back into the forest, Bandana had already sustained deep injuries to her neck and back. She was rushed towards the mainland but succumbed to her injuries on the way.

She is survived by her husband and two daughters, who are students of classes X and VIII.
