  • A swarm of 3,000 drones will light up the city’s night sky on Saturday, putting up a synchronised show on the banks of the Hooghly as part of the Vande Yogam and West Bengal Day celebrations.

The swarm will take off at 8 p.m. showcasing different poses of yoga in the sky. The drone extravaganza will also tell the story about the bond that yoga has with the nation, a senior state government official said.

Kolkata is not alien to drone spectacles.

Such shows have lit up the city skies during Dusshera celebrations over the past couple of years at Park Circus Maidan. However, this one will be one of the biggest that the eastern metropolis has ever seen.

“The drone display will be the showstopper of the Vande Yogam celebrations. Not only will yogic poses be exhibited set against the night sky, but it will tell the story of yoga and its connection with India. Moreover, the show will pay a tribute to the great Yoga masters in the country,” the official said.

People will be able to watch the show from Millenium Park, Babughat and from near the Belur Math.

Millenium Park and Prinsep Ghat will have a festive air around them on Saturday.

Cultural performances have also been planned alongside sand art, photo booths and laser shows.

On June 21 morning ~ the International Day of Yoga ~ 500 boats will have people performing synchronised Yogic poses on the Hooghly in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record.

The main International Yoga Day programme will be held on Red Road, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will participate in a mass yoga session. Gates for the public will open at 5 a.m. and the main programme will start around 6.45 a.m.

Adhikari said that around 35,000 people have registered for the Red Road event and expressed confidence that participation across the state would run into lakhs.
