Kolkata: A missing person case registered 35 days ago has turned into a murder investigation after police arrested a man for allegedly killing his girlfriend and burying her body in the sand at Henry Island’s in Bakkhali.
Police said victim Abiya Bibi had travelled to Bakkhali with her boyfriend, Jiarul Sardar, on May 16. Jiarul returned home the same day, but Abiya did not. Her family later filed a missing person report at Bakultala police station, prompting an investigation.
After weeks of pursuing leads, investigators detained Jiarul on Thursday for questioning. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to killing Abiya and disclosed the location where he had buried her body.
Police took him to Henry’s Island, where he identified the spot. A search led to the recovery of a decomposed body from beneath the sand, which was sent to Kakdwip Sub-Divisional Hospital for post mortem.
According to the preliminary investigation, there was tension between the couple over an alleged extramarital relationship. Police suspect an argument broke out between them, after which Jiarul allegedly strangled Abiya and buried her body on the beach to conceal the crime.
Investigators are trying to establish where the couple stayed during the trip and whether anyone assisted the accused in moving the body or digging the pit. Abiya’s family has demanded strict punishment for everyone responsible.
