  • KOLKATA: Parents of the RG Kar rape-murder victim have now alleged that Abesh Banerjee, a doctor and nephew of former CM Mamata Banerjee, was involved in efforts to conceal evidence after the crime. They have demanded that the CBI summon and question him as part of its ongoing probe.

The allegations surfaced a day after the CBI questioned three senior IPS officers — former Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal and deputy commissioners of police Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta. The agency had earlier questioned former Panihati MLA Nirmal Ghosh.

While a Kolkata trial court has already sentenced sole accused Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment, the Calcutta HC recently directed CBI to constitute an SIT and expand its probe into the alleged “larger conspiracy” surrounding the case.

The victim’s mother, Ratna Debnath , BJP MLA from Panihati, and her husband alleged that Abesh Banerjee’s mobile phone tower location was traced to the RG Kar Hospital premises on the night of Aug 9, 2024.

“According to the post-mortem report, my daughter died between midnight and 6 am. Everyone present at the spot or connected to the incident should be investigated. If others are being questioned, then Abesh Banerjee should also be called and interrogated,” she said.

The victim’s father claimed “Abesh Banerjee had used a hospital bathroom to wash bloodstains from his body and that same bathroom was demolished shortly after the crime,” he said.

Rejecting the allegations, a senior Trinamool neta said, “These allegations are being made solely to tarnish the image of Mamata Banerjee and are completely unfounded.” The CBI has not issued any statement on the allegations.
