  • Kolkata: The state is all set to have five new districts, including Kolkata as district borders are all set to be redrawn. Swapan Dasgupta, the state finance minister, announced the setting up of the new districts in his first budget speech on Monday.

“As part of administrative reforms to decentralize administration, improve public service delivery and bring governance closer to people, new districts, sub-divisions, municipalities and fire brigade stations will be formed. These include new districts at Kolkata, Basirhat, Sundarbans, Jangipur and Arambag; new police district of Kanthi; new Sub-Division of Gopiballabpur; new municipalities at Shiv Mandir, Gazole, Chanchal, Belda, Bagnan, Jaigaon, Kolaghat, Kamarpukur, Tungidighi; fire brigade stations at Hemtabad, Binachapra, Karandighi, Manikchak, Falta, Gitdabling of Kalimpong, Garbeta, Chandipur and Kakdwip. The Dali fire brigade station in Darjeeling will be upgraded,” said Dasgupta, adding that functional jurisdiction of Digha Sankarpur Development Authority will be extended to adjoining mouzas in Contai I and Deshpran blocks to develop coastal tourism and socio-economic development in the area,” said Dasgupta.

The decision to grant Kolkata separate district status has drawn a lot of interest, given that an attempt was made in 2011 when the Trinamool Congress had come to power though the initiative never materialized. CM Suvendu Adhikari’s principal adviser, Subrata Gupta, said, “This decision of the govt will benefit the people of Kolkata.”
