  • Kolkata: A 49-year-old lawyer, Uttam Dastidar of the Barasat District Court in North 24-Parganas, was killed in a tragic road accident while on his way to work on Wednesday morning, when an iron rod got inserted in his body after an auto-rickshaw crashed into a motorised van-rickshaw carrying iron rods on the Barasat-Barrackpore Road. Two other lawyers, including a senior lawyer, Shyamaprasad Sen, sustained serious injuries and are still undergoing treatment in hospital.

    Locals even had to bring welding equipment and cut the iron rod to free the trapped passengers from the mangled vehicle.

    Two persons, including the auto-rickshaw driver, have been detained.

    According to Barasat Court sources, the deceased, Dastidar, who hails from Nonachandanpukur in Barrackpore, had been practising at the court for several years.

    According to local sources, Dastidar, his uncle, a senior lawyer, Shyamaprasad Sen, of the district court, and another colleague were travelling from Barrackpore to Barasat Court in a hired auto-rickshaw.

    Police said the accident occurred when the speeding auto-rickshaw lost control and rammed into the van. .
