• HC refuses to fast-track Abhishek’s travel plea

  • Kolkata: The Calcutta HC on Wednesday denied an urgent hearing to TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who is seeking permission to travel abroad for eye treatment.

Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya told Banerjee’s counsel that the matter will be listed for hearing in the normal process and taken up in due course.

Banerjee faces a battery of cases and FIRs. His plea seeks the relaxation of travel restrictions imposed by a single bench of the HC in connection with a case over an allegedly provocative speech made during election campaigning in Bidhannagar.

The complaint was lodged on May 15. A resident of Baguihati submitted several video clips to the police, alleging that provocative remarks were made by the TMC MP during public speeches.

Earlier, Banerjee was allowed to travel to the United States for eye treatment, subject to conditions imposed by Justice Bibek Chaudhuri in a coal smuggling-related case.
