  • Kolkata: Family members and relatives of the Taratala warehouse collapse victims at SSKM swung between hope and grief on Thursday. While Some were relieved to learn that their loved ones survived, others were devastated after hearing that their relatives died.

So far, 11 workers have died and 19 injured workers were rescued from the site.

Anxious kin were seen rushing towards ambulances whenever they arrived outside the hospital's trauma care building.

Mohammad Mukeem, the paternal uncle of Hasan Imam, 44, from Garden Reach, said Hasan's parents were inconsolable. Hasan died in the collapse. "He was the only earning member of the family. Many relatives and people from the village have come to the hospital," Mukeem said.

Ghulam Nabi Gayen, a resident of Basanti, rushed to the hospital worried about his 24-year-old son, Jauhar Ali Gayen, who worked at the site. "My son has a deep cut on his back, but he is not critical. I managed to speak to him. I am very sad for those who could not survive. But I am thankful to the God that my son is fine," Gayen said.

Pradyut Munda, who tried to dig through the debri on Wednesday to rescue his trapped wife, looked relieved a day later. He said his wife was responding to treatment.

Santosh Mahato, a construction worker, escaped the collapse because he was outside when it happened. He came to the hospital on Wednesday night and again on Thursday to ask about his co-workers. "I informed some of their family members, and they have come to the hospital. I pray that those undergoing treatment survive," Mahato said.
