• HC defers Abhishek aide’s bail plea in land scam case

  • Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday adjourned the anticipatory bail hearing of Sumit Roy, personal assistant to Trinamool national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee, in connection with an alleged land scam case. The court directed Roy to file a supplementary affidavit by June 29 and asked the state to submit a memo of evidence.

Roy moved the single bench of Justice Jay Sengupta, claiming he had been falsely implicated in the case for “political reasons”. His counsel argued that the case was registered on June 5 despite the alleged incident dating back to May 4, 2021.

The case stems from a complaint by a man who alleged he was cheated of Rs 10 lakh on the promise of being sold a plot of land.

Opposing the bail plea, the state contended that Roy’s name surfaced during the investigation despite not being named in the FIR.

According to the prosecution, forged stamps and seals were used to facilitate the transactions, some of which were allegedly recovered from the residence of co-accused Sujoy Hazra.

“There are statements given by the witnesses including drivers of the co-accused and police personnel, manning the office of the political party at Camac Street that such money was taken by the accused namely, Sujoy Hazra and paid to the present petitioner (Roy),” the state counsel submitted.
