  • Kolkata: The RSS Shakha at Jadavpur University, named after Rishi Aurobindo, celebrated ‘Hindu Samrajjyo Dibas’ commemorating the coronation of the Maratha warrior-king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj during their morning drill on Saturday. They hoisted the saffron ‘dhwaj’ for the first time on the campus.

Around 15 participants, including students and staffs, paid floral tributes to Shivaji and Bharat Mata and remembered Shivaji’s struggle and sacrifice for establishing ‘Hindu Swarajya’ and reviving Hindutva.

JU, one of the incubation centres for left-liberal ideas in Bengal, saw its first RSS morning drill on May 12 within days of the BJP taking office in Bengal.

Palas Maji, physics dept staff and ‘mukhya shikshak’ of the JU RSS Shakha, said, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj stepped into an unequal battle against the Mughals and protected his dharma and independence. He did not merely establish the Maratha empire, he also taught the people of the Hindu community how to live with self-respect, revived Hindutva and established the ‘Hindu Swarajya’. Therefore, we commemorate the anniversary of the coronation of Shivaji as ‘Hindu Samrajjyo Dibas’ every year.”

Assistant secretary of SFI, JU local committee Koushiki Bhattacharya said, “BJP and the RSS are pushing the entire education system towards saffronisation and this event is clearly a part of that same agenda. JU is known for plurality, and above all, as an educational institution, it should remain a secular platform.”

Nationalist Students’ Front Somsurya Banerjee said, “The university authorities are bound to respect the display of RSS ideology and the dhwaj because JU right now belongs to the nationalist forces.”
