Howrah: CM Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday visited the residence of slain BJP worker Prasanta Dey in Howrah’s Bagnan and assured the bereaved family that police were working to solve the case at the earliest. Adhikari also assured that one family member would get a govt job.
Dey was killed on June 17, allegedly by Trinamool-backed attackers. An FIR was lodged at Bagnan PS against 51 people. Police arrested nine of them, and CID later arrested one more after taking over the probe. However, main accused Sheikh Mafijul is still absconding.
Consoling Dey’s wife Soma, Adhikari said: “The rule of law has now been established in the state. Not a single criminal will escape. No matter where they are — even if they hide underground — they will not be spared. The state govt will make every possible effort to ensure that these criminals receive the death penalty. We stand by your family. The govt will set the harshest possible example so that no incident like this happens to another Prasanta Dey.”
Later, speaking to reporters, the CM said he had given strict instructions to the police. “The remaining 41 must be caught quickly. The charge sheet must be filed while they are in police custody. A custodial trial must be conducted to ensure maximum punishment,” he said.
In the Kaliganj murder case of Tamanna, all but one accused have been arrested, Adhikari said. “They could not escape even after fleeing to another state. The one missing will also be caught. The harshest punishment permitted by law must be ensured. Such incidents are unacceptable,” the CM added.
The state govt provided financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the Dey family. Following official procedures, Dey’s elder daughter was also handed an appointment letter for a govt job.
Dey’s son said the family demanded capital punishment for those responsible for his father’s murder. “Our family urged the CM to ensure that the accused are hanged. He assured us that police are investigating the case and those involved will be brought to justice,” he said.
