  • Kolkata: A suspected arms trafficker was arrested with an illegal firearm and live ammunition in north Kolkata’s Jorabagan area on Friday evening after police acted on a specific intelligence input about an impending arms deal.

The accused, Pradip Sarkar, was apprehended by a team from the detective dept’s anti-rowdy section near a public toilet at Maharshi Debendra Road, around 6.25 pm. During a search, officers recovered a country-made 7 mm pistol and three live cartridges from his possession. The firearm was allegedly being carried without a valid licence.

Sarkar allegedly told investigators that he had come to the spot to sell the weapon to members of an unidentified criminal gang. However, the intended buyers managed to flee after spotting the police team before the deal could be completed.
