A businessman was abducted at gunpoint outside a shopping mall in Phulbagan, Kolkata, on Saturday night. A gang of men posed as CID officers to lure him into a vehicle before demanding a ransom of one crore rupees. When the ransom was not paid, the gang assaulted him, robbed him of Rs 70,000 in cash and a gold necklace, and fled.
The businessman, a resident of Baduria, has filed a formal complaint at Phulbagan Police Station. Police have initiated an investigation.
The businessman is involved in the import-export trade. On Saturday evening, he visited a shopping mall in the Phulbagan area accompanied by two friends.
As the group was leaving the mall, several individuals approached them and identified themselves as CID officers. Under the pretext of conducting a search, the men forced the businessman into a black Scorpio vehicle. His two companions attempted to intervene and were allegedly assaulted by members of the gang.
Once inside the moving vehicle, a pistol was held to the businessman’s head. The gang demanded a ransom of one crore rupees. When he was unable to pay, he was subjected to a severe beating inside the vehicle.
After realising that securing the ransom was unlikely, the gang took Rs 70,000 in cash and the gold necklace the businessman was carrying. They then fled the scene.
The businessman lodged a formal complaint at Phulbagan Police Station following the incident. Police have registered the case and begun an investigation. No further details on arrests or the identity of the accused have been released as of Sunday.
The incident has caused panic in the area, according to local reports. Phulbagan Police Station had also received a separate complaint of sexual harassment of a minor in the same jurisdiction on Saturday, adding to the volume of cases the station is currently handling.
The gang used a black Scorpio vehicle to carry out the abduction. They identified themselves as CID officers to gain the trust of the victim and his companions before forcing him into the car. The use of a firearm and the impersonation of law enforcement officers are central to the complaint filed by the businessman.
The victim’s two friends, who were present at the scene, were assaulted when they tried to stop the abduction. Their condition has not been reported.
