Mamata loyalists accuse rebels of running ‘parallel organisation’, fire 4 complaints

Kolkata: The Trinamool bloc loyal to Mamata Banerjee filed four fresh police complaints on Sunday against the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee, accusing the breakaway group of illegally using the party’s name, symbol and designations to mislead workers.
The complaints, filed by Trinamool joint national secretary Dola Sen, were spread across four jurisdictions — Kalighat, Pragati Maidan, New Town and Bidhannagar Cyber Police Station — naming Ritabrata, Arup Roy, Javed Khan, Sandipan Saha and Biplab Mitra for allegedly running a parallel organisation.
The trigger was a conference organised by the rebel bloc in New Town, where Arup Roy was named chairperson. The loyalist faction maintains that Mamata Banerjee was voted chairperson for life at a 2022 party conference, and cites party rules stating that the next conference is scheduled only for 2027 and can be convened solely by the chairperson.
Sen said the loyalists have also approached the Election Commission and want the status quo maintained until it rules. “The party’s name and symbol are, were and will remain with Mamata,” she said.
The rebels dismissed the complaints. “Anyone can file a complaint. There is the law and the EC. Let’s keep faith in them,” Ritabrata said.
The two factions are also sparring over the June 21 Martyrs’ Day observance, with both camps seeking to hold events at Victoria House — the traditional venue for the occasion.
Loyalists Kunal Ghosh and Sen were at the site on Sunday morning with decorators taking measurements, though it remains unclear whether they have received police permission.
“It was during a Mamata Banerjee-led movement that party soldiers were martyred. I can’t comment on weeds and tadpoles, but we have applied according to procedure and hope police permission will be granted,” Ghosh said.
The rebels have also applied for the same venue. Ritabrata earlier said he was prepared to observe the day “wherever permission was granted,” adding that if necessary, the observance would be held “even with just five people.”
