• Arrests allay NRS fears but night security still a concern

  • Kolkata: The arrest of four men accused of harassing junior doctors at NRS Medical College has brought a sense of security back to the campus, even though the accused, residents of neighbouring Convent Road, were released on bail.

Women doctors and students on Monday told TOI that the arrests should serve as a deterrent and hoped the incident would lead to stronger security measures on the campus.

The complaint was lodged by residents of the Lady Doctor’s Hostel, or LDH, which houses postgraduate trainees, post-doctoral trainees and interns. Located behind the administrative building at the far end of the hospital campus, the multistorey hostel is separated from a nearby slum by a high concrete wall. Sources said all four accused were from the adjoining slum.

“We have been told that the accused have been let off on bail, which is a bit disappointing. But the fact that the college administration promptly responded to our problem and police arrested the miscreants swiftly should act as a deterrent for others,” said a second-year PGT.

The campus has four women’s hostels, including the LDH, two undergraduate hostels and one for nursing students. Sources said residents of the LDH often face harassment, including catcalls and stone-pelting, because of the hostel’s location.

“Though security vigilance was significantly beefed up post the RG Kar rape-murder incident, the intensity seems to be going down. But one positive thing is that the college administration has become very proactive to security concerns of women students and doctors,” said a final-year PGT.

A final-year PDT who lives in the hostel said groups of youths are often seen roaming around the campus late at night.

“The vicinity of the hostel becomes deserted at night as this is the corner away from the hospital building. So security becomes a bit of a concern. Though I have not faced any of those miscreants, I have heard from others about those miscreants,” said the PDT.

Hospital administrators also cited security concerns over visitors to the Menial Quarters inside the campus, which houses several Group D employees. The quarters are located adjacent to the undergraduate women’s hostel and the nursing hostel.

Following the latest incident, the hospital administration has sought stricter patrolling around the women’s hostels, especially at night. Officials admitted that, since NRS is a public hospital, regulating visitor entry into the campus remains difficult.

“We are taking up all measures to address the security concerns of the students and working closely with the police so that such incidents are not repeated in the future,” said an official.
